Above are two links one to the EPA about the hazards of Indoor Air Quailty in American homes today and the other is a link about an outside study done on the Trane CleanEffects by and far the best air cleaner on the market today.
As American's spend more time than ever in our homes at the same time the construction of newer homes is more energy efficient than ever before which has resulted in the air in a lot of homes and buildings being more dirty than the air outside. There is a multi-billion dollar industry selling indoor air quality products and gadgets to the homeowners, but the problem is that most of them do not work. A room cleaner will work, but only in that room and in the area right around the cleaner. Thick pleated filter will catch more dust and contaminants, but they can also restrict airflow and cause system failures and coils to leak.
Trane CleanEffects is the best air cleaner and we highly recommend it for anyone with pulmonary, heart, allergies or other health issues. The CleanEffects not only kills 99.98% of air born contaminants it also results in homes having 50% less dust. Although the CleanEfffects is expensive for a lot of people the difference it will make in their lives will make the expense worth it.
Other indoor air quality items that offer are: Media Filters, UV Lights, Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers.
Media Filters are 4 - 5 inch thick filters that are made in a way that they don't restrict airflow, but catch more dust and biological contaminants than regular filters and last from 6 - 18 months depending on the home. The cost of a media filter is no more than a year supply of good filters would cost and in some cases they can be fit right in the existing return air grill, if not than we can install a holder for them to sit in.
UV Lights are installed in the air handler plenum and they zap the dust and contaminants that go through the ventilation system. Don't be fooled and spend thousands of dollars on a UV Light system or spend hundreds on replacement lights if you already have a system in place. The only draw back to the UV Light system is white dust which can cause health issues for some people.
Humidifiers add moisture to the air. Although this is not historically an issue in Florida, with the cold winters we have had combined with energy efficienct homes the humidty in homes in this area of Florida can go down to dangerous levels in the winter times. When the humidy goes below 30% homeowners can experience breathing difficulties and nose bleeds; adding moisture back into the air can alleviate these problems.
Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air. If you are in the market for a new A/C system then a variable speed fan motor with a thermostat that also acts as a humidstat is the answer for you, if however you do not need a new system and are worried about humidity build-up in your home then we can install a humidstat. Humidstats are a must have for snowbirds so they don't have to worry about coming home to a house with mold.
